I Watched Rosaline the Movie for Free on YouTube
I mean, Romeo is practically an olden-day version of a modern-day F-boy. Dude is clearly not worth it, and he proves that time and time again. This movie puts a fresh spin on romance—I was honestly impressed.
Hello, I'm Winter Style. I’m a self-proclaimed writer. I’ve written A Wolf In the Palace and my bestseller Inquisitor Cumdumpster. A Slut For You Book 1 of The Omega Project is coming out—feel free to check it out.
So, I watched the trailer for Rosaline when it was
released by Hulu, and back then I really wanted to watch it. And I absolutely
would have—if I wasn’t raised by a poor family that made me so stingy that even
when I’m starving, I won’t buy food because I want to save that money so it
gains interest.
Yeah, but enough about my poor past.
Rosaline is a great movie that combines modern humor
with classic Shakespearean drama. It not only showcases romantic love but also
explores the love found in friendship. Our protagonist, Rosaline, has a
starry-eyed vision of what love should be and whom she should love—even though
she isn’t quite sure why. She just has this picture-perfect image of love, and
she wants exactly that.
As the story progresses, Rosaline doesn’t even care that her
precious romantic Romeo cheated on her with Juliet—who is also her cousin. She
understands that she’s no longer the apple of Romeo’s eye, but she still yearns
for that perfect image of love. And that image requires Romeo, because she’s
invested in him. She thinks he’s the key to achieving the ideal love she holds
in her mind.
So, she decides to break up Romeo and Juliet by becoming
friends with Juliet and telling her what a player Romeo really is. She takes
Juliet out and lets her run loose in a bar filled with men. She educates Juliet
about all the grown-up stuff—if you know what I mean. The best part of the
movie, for me, was watching Juliet and Rosaline’s bond grow stronger.
But even though their bond was growing, it wasn’t strong
enough to override Rosaline’s need to get Romeo back. And it all came crashing
down when Juliet found out that Rosaline used to date Romeo—and is still trying
to win him back.
That’s when the writer throws in Dario, who—might I add—is a
hunk with or without his shirt on. I mean, even the director made sure he was
shirtless throughout that scene.
Dario makes Rosaline question her love for Romeo. Dario is a
total jerk, according to Rosaline. Just because her father chose him as a
suitor, Rosaline decided to be a complete prick to him. She was so focused on
Romeo that she didn’t even try to let new people in—choosing instead to
single-mindedly shove Dario away because she was too busy thinking about Romeo
and how to get him back. She was too busy being a prick, even though Dario had
helped her and had been a kind gentleman who would be a wonderful friend to
literally anyone. I know I’d love to be his friend.
But this love-hate relationship can be seen as something
deeper. Rosaline’s love for Romeo is most definitely an obsession—and a very
toxic one at that. Because of her obsession with this specific structure of
love, Rosaline neglects people who could be important to her, like Dario and
Juliet. She doesn’t mind hurting them to get the love she wants. And she’s
hell-bent on avoiding logical questions like: What exactly about Romeo does
Rosaline like? Which, by the way, is a pretty good point on Dario’s part.
I mean, Romeo is practically an olden-day version of a
modern-day F-boy. Dude is clearly not worth it, and he proves that time and
time again. But it’s not Romeo that Rosaline seeks—it’s the image of love she
wants to capture.
Toward the climax of the movie, we see Rosaline slowly
warming up to Dario, which allows her to realize what she was really chasing.
It wasn’t her love for Romeo—it was her obsession with love itself.
After letting go of that obsession, she was able to let more
people in and at least try to protect the ones who are important to her.
My favorite scene is the ending, with Romeo and Juliet on a
boat to Cyprus. The lesson from the movie was loud and clear: You need to be
sure of what you’re really after—otherwise, you might end up stuck with
something you don’t even care for.
